Shotokan Karate Dictionary

The Shotokan Karate Dictionary
Schlatt

This is the type of book that will last you your entire training life. As a beginner, the information in this book will be very useful, for it will give you an insight into many of the useful information that you will need for your early training days. For the advanced karateka, there's more than enough information for you to sieve through for weeks at a time. As an instructor, you'll need this book as a close reference for your teaching. The name however I don't feel does it justice. Granted, I couldn't think of a more appropriate name that doesn't involve a million and one words, but I just feel this book is so much more than a dictionary. In the same manner however, this is not the type of book you'll read cover to cover in one big go either. Instead, it's a book that'll have you coming back for your entire karate life.

Firstly may I comment on how beautiful the book is. I know you may find this completely shallow and of no importance what so ever, but I do feel it's worth a mention. This book is wonderfully illustrated with both kanji and photography, and this alone makes referencing that much easier and more pleasurable. I know many of you will by shouting 'But do I really care about how it looks?' and my answer is 'Yes', and when I explain further, you'll appreciate why.

The purpose of this book - from my point of view at least - is primarily to use as a reference throughout your karate career. This will widen your knowledge, and make your study of the art that much easier. I'm sure; every karateka throughout the world has encountered a principle, term or piece of information that they don't entirely understand. And where do they turn? Now they have an option, in an easy to follow reference book.

The book covers the following topics:

Preface
Pronunciation
Numerical system
Elements of karate training
Different levels and directions
Kata
Basic kata
Advanced kata
Instructions during training
Movements
Stances
Postures
Techniques
The origin of the name Karate-Do
Master Funakoshi Gichin
Other important terms in Karate-Do
Selected terms
In the dojo
Dojo kun
Twenty precepts of Karate-Do
Different karate styles
Karate philosophies
Tournament Terminology
Parts of the human body
Zen
Index of Japanese terms
Bibliography
About the Author

As you can clearly see, this book is extremely wide and varied in its content, covering more than simple terms and their translation. In fact, one of the most important features of this book I feel is the use of photography. Here I am going to prove the cynics wrong, by showing how presentation is very important in the usefulness of this book. Say you take the words 'Sosoku kari', which is translated to mean 'Two-legs
mower, cutter'. You read this somewhere in a back of a normal book, and the translation means as much to you as the Japanese words. What the hell is a two-leg mower? Ah, this is where the illistration comes in useful. Here, to accompany the translation comes a neat little photograph of a karateka effectively sweeping his opponent. Therefore, you understand the translation that much more, meaning you take more away from the book.

This book is very wide in its covering, and covers most of the translating that you will ever require. More than just translations, it gives you a deep insight into many technical terms and concepts. For example, the concept 'Mu' is looked at, and rather than simply stating 'Nothing', it gives you an overview of what this concept means, and its significance to the art of Shotokan karate.

This book is so much more than a dictionary. It's a real resource in itself, and will give you much information for any topic in karate. Along with the points already mentioned, there are also many fantastic personal photographs of Schlatt, and many senior instructors such as Fujinaga Yasuyuki, to whome the book is dedicated. There are also fantastic quotations from instructors such as Tanaka Sensei, and wonderful photographs of the author with such excellent karateka.

I also love the section dealing with kata, where the symbolic movements of the kata are photographed, and placed along with their terminology and information related to the kata. This I feel is a real nice touch, and I must say, Schlatt has very nice technique!

I could go on about this book all day, but I'll shut up now before I bore you. I really enjoyed reading through this excellent book, and I will undoubtedly refer to it for many many years to come.

P.S, If there are any cynics about the illustration and importance of the design, please do get yourself a copy so I can prove you all wrong!!!!

WKF Breaking News:

Breaking News:

WKF’s alleged financial infractions will be investigated by an international fraud organisation under the judgement of the international court. Mr Espinos (WKF President) and some of his officials stand accused of receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars from Persian Gulf countries, match fixing with senior WKF referees, lobbying for the election of AKF executive directors and many more allegations besides. Accompanying claims of fake contracts and money laundering are only made more serious by the apparent attempts made at concealing such corrupt activities. It is suspected by some that the Olympics were in fact used as a vehicle to help Mr Espinos hide a large part of the claimed activities.

Now, after almost two decades of apparent mismanagement that saw Karate fail in its bid to feature in the Olympic Games, a WKF secretary has indicated the scale of the corruption runs deep. So much so that the World Karate Federation will now be scrutinized by an international court in Europe. It is feared by many that the result could threaten WKF's status as an official Karate governing body of the world.

Many are now calling for all Karateka across the world to stand up and support the case for justice in the international court. To do their duty and keep Karate clean of corruption.

Dynamic Karate

Dynamic Karate
M. Nakayama

This is an excellent textbook for beginners and advanced Karate-ka alike, and clearly demonstrates a wide range of Karate techniques that are practiced in Shotokan Karate. One of the best features of the book is that most of the photographs show Nakayama Sensei himself performing techniques.

Karate has certainly come a long way since the teachings of Funakoshi Sensei, and this book demonstrates the JKA method of examining and teaching Karate along scientific lines.

To accompany each section based on the foundations of Karate - Dachi, Tsuki, Uke, Uchi and Keri - comes a scientific study of each technique. Through this, Nakayama Sensei’s objective was to scientifically make Karate techniques more effective and better for our bodies. What makes this even easier to follow is the ‘Things to avoid’ section to each technique, providing greater guidance.

Dynamic Karate is easy to follow, and from my own experience, a book you’ll return to over and over again due to its extensive topic coverage. It deals with speed, balance, stability, the hips and many more topics. There are also lists of scientific data that could prove useful in your training and teaching.

The book is beautifully presented with black and white photographs, including some a the young H.Kanazawa being demonstrated upon by Master Nakayama. The book, through its use of both photograph and text, clearly and coherently analyses all of the karate techniques.

Apart from the obvious educational significance of this book, there are some wonderful photographs of Karate greats such as Nishiyama, Kanazawa, Shirai, Asai and Ueki in action. Also included are photographs showing a duel between Enoeda Sensei and Shirai Sensei on a rock near the sea.

This book is a must for all Karate-Ka in my opinion, and will serve as a lifelong aid in your study of Shotokan Karate.

Karate is the crown jewel in Martial Arts

Karate is the crown jewel in Martial Arts
Karate is the crown jewel in Martial Arts. We believe in our tradition and history, maintain a solid personal attitude, obey to our elders and authorities, love our sport and often live a life for Karate. We really care for Karate and we are thankful for what karate provided to us in general. Though WKF failed again for third time to include karate in the Olympics, we Young Karate Innovators - an international group of martial artists - will take care of that and we will design the new era of karate.

There are times of innovation and reflection for every sport. We seriously believe that facemask and body protection is against the ideas and principles of our beloved sport and against our tradition.

YKI knows that many of our elders support this "traditional" view. Karate is centuries of tradition, let us maintain the good parts and innovate where innovation is necessary. We need to rejuvenate our tradition and we need to rejuvenate our leadership in high level in order to come back to where we all belong!

We would ask you kind reader and admirer of Karate to support us with your opinion in three important questions.

Email to W.K.F by Kakha Basilia President of Georgian karate Federation

It has already been clarified that karate will not be included in the year 2020 program of Olympic games and was the third futile experiment from Mr Espinos.

We were all waiting for Mr. Espinos to apologize and resign, instead of he began to strengthen his position and abrogating the statutes, he was sowing their illegal actions. The big mistake was to relieve the General Secretary from his position. The programme of Mr Espinos was, when he became president, to make karate an Olympic sport but instead of that the WKF became corrupted and a democratic locked organization, where only the largest countries have rights and smaller countries go out over the role of statistics. Instead of bringing money and development to the WKF, he made WKF,as a business, only a face mask, where no one would not be able to guarantee the criterion, and on the contrary, be dangerous for sportsman in spite of the demands of all countries to abolish, he would continue his business.

The authorized advertising agency which was to carry out the campaign could not attract criticism, it was only the “K” which did not exit the karate hall. Every mistake, which Mr.Espinos made during his governance, we cannot enumerate, but we forgive him for everything because he promised that karate will be in the Olympic games.

Mr Espinos, karate could not gain entrance to the Olympic Games. We appeal to you if you have any dignity and are interested in the future of karate, resign and provide the opportunity for karate to develope. I consent to this letter being sent to the national federation of 30 countries, for your personal interest I can provide you with a list. P.S.When the world wrestling association was removed from the olympic family all federation presidents agreed and removed Raphael Martinetti the wrestling president from this position despite his being at the head for 20 years. The wrestlers solved their problems and within 2 months returned to the olympics.

I as a family of world karate back to you Mr Espinos, I want to ask you please retire now!

WKF Corruption Scandal Threatens To Collapse Karate

The global Karate community expected WKF President Mr Espinos to take full responsibility and resign from his post when Karate was unsuccessful in its Olympic bid for a 3rd time. An honourable decision he did not take. Subsequently a letter from the WKF secretary clearly pointed to large scale corruption and 'miss-management by the President' at the heart of the organisation. Highlighted as seriously questionable in his letter, were the Spanish media contractors commissioned to work on the Olympic bid. Furthermore it pointed to undisclosed budgets allocated to such contractors that were awarded without proper consultation and due diligence. It formally requested a report detailing the contracts and financial agreements. Shocked followers of the WKF reeled at the news as the story emerged. Mr Espinos and Mr Dinsdale instead of responding to WKF secretary’s formal letter of request as treasurer, sacked him immediately and pushed WKF executive directors to negotiate with the national federations to keep Mr Espinos in his post.

Today it was revealed that a considerable amount of WKF revenue was lost during the past two years on the stock market potentially by Mr Espinos. It is alleged that most of WKF contracts with Spanish contractors are not real and have been forged to cover WKF loses in stock market.Mr Espinos, Dinsdal, Esclante, Kassiss, Nordahl today many people suggest it is the right time you leave World Karate Federation forever. They urge you to respect Karate and leave it alone

Dear colleague,

I am a Karate do teacher from Asturias, Spain and have been exercising my profession since 1985. I have just published a book which I would like to bring to the public’s attention. For this reason, without our being acquainted, I am taking the liberty of sending you this email so that you will be aware of the existence of this work. I hope you will forgive me for taking up a little of your time.

NEW PUBLICATION: KARATE DO BOOK: “COMPLETE KARATE-KATA METHODOLOGY”

Sensei Luke Perry of England, Sensei Antoine Etcheverry of France, Sensei Thierry Lint of Belgium, Sensei Marcus Gutzmer of Germany, Sensei Daniel Acuña of Lima, Peru and Sensei Hernán Beltrán Silva (Chief Instructor of S.K.I.F. Chile), they have got a book and and his opinion is very favorable.
“An extensive and valuable source of reference... there are many insights that will inspire me within its pages.”
Richard Amos Sensei, Chief Instructor of World Traditional Karate Organization (New York)
This work constitutes a practical manual in encyclopedic format which will greatly facilitate the preparation of your classes.

This work is comprised of a tome of 500, A-4 pages. It has some 4,300 colour diagrams and is published in Spanish and English. It deals with work which takes the Heian kata as its starting point and which has a specific methodology and concrete objectives which it uses to create a training method. Furthermore, it is well presented and printed on high-quality paper.

I would be very grateful if you could spread the word about this book amongst your own contacts. I firmly believe that it will be a reference work regarding methodological development, presentation, the exposition of its contents and also regarding the idea of final synthesis (intuitive Karate) which is completely innovative.

The book has been endorsed by the Spanish Karate Federation, The Comunidad Valenciana Karate Federation and has a foreword by Master Antonio Olivo Seba, 8th Dan and International Coach. What is more, several traditional karate associations have already obtained the book since they consider it to be of great interest.

MY TRIP TO ANANDA DAY CARE CENTRE

MY TRIP TO ANANDA DAY CARE CENTRE

For many weeks I waited for this journey and the day finally came. My brother and I wore our clothes and headed for Mayfair. By the time we got there everyone was ready waiting and anxious to go. We were accompanied by Aunty Gladys,Sensei, Sempais and some of the Staff from the Gym. We all boarded the bus and headed to the “Day Care Centre”. Before reaching the Centre life was different for the people living around that area. We passed through many places; firstly it was ‘Banana’ then ‘Ukonga’ where there was a prison and thereafter ‘Gongo la mboto’ then ‘Pugu’ and lastly ‘Kisarawe’. Finally after an hour’s ride we got to “ANANDA DAY CARE CENTRE” The Centre is situated near a stinky dumpsite. There were countless flies everywhere...
Children from the village stood in one straight line ready to greet us by saying “Namaste”. There were a lot of dogs and puppies around the village. After seeing how the children at the village lived I felt like crying. At that moment I was thankful for all that I have. I could not imagine that some children could sleep on an empty stomach. I replaced myself with them and finally understood that life is difficult out there. We were offered drinks, slices of bread and biscuits. We had lots of fun and our “Group Leader” made us play games to keep close tie with the village kids. I made friends with Furaha the funniest of them all, Abdul, Johnes, Shakira, Rukaya, Sude, Hamisi, Faraji and many others. I could see hope in their eyes despite the difficulties they were facing in life hoping that  some day in their lives they would be someone and were not ready to give up...
All the children at the centre were from poor families unable to obtain their daily needs. The sad truth is they have never seen a luxurious life nor enjoyed the facilities we have. We all have our needs and wants but we never get enough of them. We need to change and be fair!
Competitions were played tired we got, I could not believe that the happiest day of my life was finally coming to an end. Saying goodbye to my new friends was the saddest moment of my life. From the bottom of my heart, I thank Aunty Gladys, Mr. Satya and all those who help the poor children. I thank them for their hard work and efforts.
My eyes are now open and I now know how people in this world live and strive for life is totally different from how you and I live. I have learnt a lesson, life is difficult. In my opinion “life is a game sometimes you win and sometimes you lose” but always remember to live life before life lives you...
As we enjoyed our ride back to Mayfair, we sang, talked and also ate fries. We became more of friends, respected each other and more so our elders. We learnt there should be no gender discrimination.

Well we were more than a JKA Team!

CONCLUSION:
Well know I know that I have to be friendly, respect others and never give up. I have to help me fellows in any difficulty they are facing. I have to love everyone and respect them even the youngest of them all. Lastly, we all have to avoid “Racial Discrimination”
A very big and warm thank you to the entire JKA/WF-Tanzania Team, this journey has changed me “the outer way and also the inner way”

Fatemeh Talebi.
